2015 Mazda Miata MX-5
There is little solid information on the next generation Mazda Miata MX-5, but it is expected to lose weight and gain power in pursuit of the small roadster philosophy it has always followed. Mazda has had a generally good reputation with light weight sports cars, like the RX line. Significant power improvements may be made to remain competitive in the face of the Subaru BRZ.
The design aspect of the car is expected to change greatly, now that the new mazda design language Kodo has taken the brand by storm. Many consider this to be an improvement however, and the new car should be good looking.
A new updated platform is to be developed for the rear-wheel drive Miata with a focus of weight saving, and then shared with Alfa Romeo for a Alfa Romeo Spyder resurrection. This will be the first time that Mazda has shared its award winning recipe with another company and it should go a long way to keep the keep rear-wheel drive sports car profitable. The current car weighs in at about 2500 pounds, and the new model could be as light as 1800 pounds, though 2200 pounds is a figure we hear more often.
The suspension will be all new, and details on it are scarce unfortunately.
While the Mazda Miata has always been a naturally aspirated sports car, rumors are circulating of a downsized turbo-charged engine to help save weight, most likely a 1.3 liter four cylinder pushing out 200 horsepower.
No details are available, but I expect a six speed manual and a dual clutch auto as an option, a first for the Mazda Miata.
